(Don't forget that New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere, so its seasons are opposite of North America and Europe.)Kaikoura is one of the few places in the world where Sperm Whales can be seen year-round and close to shore.

morning
One of the reasons that the morning time is the best time of day for whale watching has to do with weather and ocean conditions. The wind is a key player when it comes to smooth seas, and morning trips often have less wind.
Should I bring binoculars whale watching : The next essential item to have in your bag on your whale watching trip is a nice pair of binoculars or “binos”. With a high-powered magnifying lens, experienced whale watchers can see much farther away and potentially have the opportunity to log more sightings of multiple species on one trip.
Early Morning:
Early morning, typically around sunrise (between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM), can be an excellent time for whale watching. The ocean is often calm, and there is less boat traffic, providing a tranquil environment. Moreover, marine life tends to be more active during these hours.
Most of the wildlife activities in Kaikoura will cost you a pretty penny. They also book out very quickly if you don't plan ahead (like me). There are however many options to take in the beautiful scenery and wildlife that are totally free. Dolphins get spotted from the main beach almost every day!
How close to shore do whales come
It's very normal gray whale behavior. They sometimes come within 50 feet of the shore.Whales and other ocean life can be harder to see from shore, but if you're patient and the conditions are right, you will likely find what you're looking for!Top Whale-Watching Destinations

Where do whales go at night : Breathing near the surface where whales sleep allows them to breathe more conscientiously, meaning each and every breath counts. This is likely why all sleeping whales and dolphins will sleep at the water's surface.

Blue whales are sighted off the Kaikōura coastline at various times throughout the year, generally on a mission as they are passing through, when sighted on our tours it is very special indeed. At the end of the trip, everyone seemed to have been happy with it. Not only had we got up close to whales, we had also seen other bird and sea life on a pleasant outing with some great views of coast and mountains. If you're keen to see whales, Kaikoura is a great place to do it.
Do orcas come close to shore : There are at least three different types of killer whales that are known to swim through California's waters: transient, offshore and resident whales. Transients and residents tend to keep close to the coast, but only the transients are known to feed on marine mammal species.
